For In Ground and Above Ground Pools

How Do I Locate A Pool Leak?

In general there are normally 4 separate areas to check when swimming pools leak.

1. Pool plumbing lines “Pressure side of pump.”
The pool loses more when the pool pump is running.

2. Pool plumbing lines “Suction side of pump.” The pool loses more when the pool pump is off.

3. “Vinyl Liner” or “Concrete or Fiberglass surface”

Pool loses the same amount when the pool pump is running as when the pool pump is off.

4. Filter system and accessories.
The pump, filter, heater, chemical feeders, cleaners, light niches, faceplate screws, etc….

Do you lose (more/less/the same) amount of pool water when the pump is on versus when the pump is off?

A. Things that the homeowner can easily check for first.

1. Is water going out the backwash line while pump is on?

2. Make sure the ladder “rubber bumpers” arc securely in place and that the ladder hasn’t torn the liner.

3. Look for wet spots in ground around pool and filter area.

4. In concrete or fiberglass pools, do you have a hydrostat relief valve in the main drain? (Most vinyl liner pools will not have this)

5. With pump off tighten all screws on skimmer, light, return, step (may have to remove trim) and main drain (may have to remove cover to got to sealing ring make sure safety cover is reinstalled properly before running pool pump).

6. The number one cause for holes in pool liner is the “telepole” with no attachment on the end (ct. net/brush). The number two cause for holes in pool liners is no rubber bumpers on ladder rails.

B. FIRST WITH POOL PUMP RUNNING

1. Place a mark on skimmer @ 3″ below top of skimmer, is preferred.

  • a. Get a 5-gallon bucket.

  • b. Place a mark in the middle on the inside.

  • c. Fill bucket with pool water to mark,

  • d. Place on step in pool or on pool deck next to pool, (the bucket of water is used for comparison do to loss from evaporation or gain do to rain) Try to keep the water in the bucket as close to the temperature as the water in the pool.

2. Fill pool up to the mark on skimmer

3. When pool is at mark write down time. ________

4. What is the water temperature? ________

5. What is the outside temperature @ at day and night? ____/____

6. Is it very windy out? ________

7. Is solar blanket on pool? _______

8. After 12 or 24 hours mea sure how much the water level dropped. ________

9. Measure how much water dropped in bucket. ________

10. Compare water loss/gain in pool to bucket. If you have the same amount
of loss you probably do not have a leak,

IT IS WATER EVAPORATION.

C. NEXT WITH POOL PUMP OFF

1. Fill pool up to the mark on skimmer,

2. Do bucket test as above. _______

3. When pool is at mark write down time. _________

4. What is the water temperature? __________

6. Is it very windy out? ____

7. Is solar blanket on? ____

8. After 12 or 24 hours (Same amount of time in step A) measure how much the water level dropped. __________

9. Compare loss/gain in pool to water level in bucket.

10. Now compare loss/gain to that when pump was running.

I Don't Have Any Ozone Bubbles. What Should I do?

Not having any visible ozone bubbles coming into your spa CAN be a sign of no water flow, and therefore a faulty circulation pump—BUT NOT ALWAYS. The key to making this determination takes a keen eye and a little patience. As a first step, remove the filters from your spa. Clogged filters reduce water flow that in turn can create several problems for your tub. With the filters removed do the bubbles reappear? If yes, clean or replace the filters.

If not, the next step is to determine whether the circulation pump is operating properly. By carefully observing the water surface can you see a slight ripple directly up from the water return? If you can, move ahead to the last paragraph. If you cannot see the water moving, can you feel it moving? Reach down into the tub and place your hand over the water return point. Can you feel the water flowing back into the tub? If yes, again move forward. If not, there is one last thing to do before calling us for a service call on your tub. Carefully pour ¼ cup of PH Reducer down the open filter stand pipe, wait five minutes, repeat, and try resetting your circuit breakers. Since PH Reducer is a mild acid the cleaning action may dissolve tiny particles that are clogging your circulation pump. If, after twenty-four hours, the bubbles have not reappeared, call us for a service call.

If you have determined that the water is flowing to your tub, but no bubbles are present, the problem will probably be a clogged ozonator line, or a broken or failed ozonator check valve. Unless directed by service technician, we do not recommend that customers make further attempts to track the problem source and a service call is in order.

How Do I Clean My Filters?

FILTER CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Filters should be cleaned at least every 4 weeks as noted below:

STEP #1

Add full strength SpaGuard Filter Cleaner and Degreaser uniformly onto elements or soak elements in a solution diluted 1 part SpaGuard Cleaner and Degreaser to 3 parts water. Light brushing may be required in areas of heavy grease accumulation. Rinse thoroughly.

STEP #2

Using rubber gloves, soak elements in a diluted acid solution to remove scale build-up. (To make acid solution, use 1 lb. pH decreaser diluted at the rate of one bottle per 5 gals of water or muriatic acid diluted 1 qt. per 5 gals water). Thoroughly flush acid solution from filter elements with a garden hose. If possible, let elements dry, and reassemble filters.
